GO’s Sarah Jayne indulges in a night of affordable opulence at Bert’s Jazz Bar at The Merchant Hotel, Belfast…
When The Merchant unveiled its stunning £16million New Chapter last year, I have to admit there was one addition to its plethora of new hospitality offerings that I was most excited about – Bert’s Jazz Bar.
Harking back to the intimate jazz bars of 1930s New York, swathed in plush red velvet and sumptuous leather, its stunning sleek art-deco interior and nightly jazz sessions have added a new dimension to Belfast’s social scene. Having frequented the venue on several occasions for drinks, I was excited, with a girlfriend in tow, to finally sample the gourmet delights I’ve heard so much about.
Settled into a cosy booth by our friendly waiter, we were presented with a box of breads, butter and tapenade, which was greatly received to take the edge off our ravenous appetites after a busy day.
To start I chose the chicken tempura, which was simple, yet perfectly executed, with three succulent pieces of chicken breast cooked in a light crispy batter served a top a crisp seasonal salad. My dining partner opted for the prawn bisque – a rich, thick, creamy prawn broth, which was bursting with flavour and perfectly seasoned.
