This month GO chatted with Sense nightclub resident, Cool FM’s DJ Hix. Hix plays in Sense two Saturdays a month and is also a High Five Monday resident at the ultra popular Cookstown nightclub. Here is what he had to say when we caught up with him…
Discribe your DJ style?
I always find this a hard one to answer, simply because I don’t like to box myself into one particular style. My base comes from being a HipHop and RnB DJ, but I’m very open minded when it comes to music. So I play anything that will rock the crowd, but always make sure to do it in a unique style – cutting, scratching, and quick fire mixing to keep the crowd hyped all night.
Out of all the tunes you have, which one never fails?
It really depends on the club that I’m in, but in general over the last six months, ‘Levels’ by Avicii has been the biggest tune without question.
What’s you favourite tune of all time?
‘Human Nature’ by Michael Jackson
What’s the best event you’ve played at?
I’m grateful that this is tricky to answer, because I’ve been lucky enough to play at some huge events. However, still to this day, playing before 50 Cent at The Odyssey Arena particularly stands out. Just me and my turntables on stage in front of almost 14,000 people – it was an incredible feeling.
If you could DJ anywhere in the world where would you choose?
A residency in one of the superclubs in Vegas would be nice!
What has been the biggest highlight of your career to date?
I have to say two things…One is moving to five days a week on N.Ireland’s biggest music radio station, Cool FM. And secondly, being so heavily involved with the MTV EMA’s that were in Belfast last year was amazing. I hosted the MTV Live gig at The Ulster Hall, DJ’d at the official MTV pre-party the night before, attended the awards themselves, and then DJ’d at the official MTV EMA after-party right after the awards.
Who is the most famous person you have ever worked with?
It would be a toss up between Rihanna and 50 Cent.
Who would you say is your favorite DJ? And why?
Jazzy Jeff – because he has the perfect combination of breathtaking turntable skills and crowd-rocking music selection. He’s probably my main inspiration in the DJ world.
What is your favorite part of your job?
The scream of the crowd – that point in the night when I build them up and drop the biggest tune of the moment. The scream that reverberates back at me when it hits is incredible, and always makes the hairs stand on the back of my neck (and puts a big smile on my face!)
When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?
Soul music always does the trick. If I’m driving home from a crazy gig, I’ll listen to some Dwele or Musiq Soulchild or D’Angelo. When I have a night off I love going out with my wife to a nice restaurant for some good food.
Have you anything exciting lined up for 2012?
That would be telling!
Do you plan on releasing an album in the future?
I am currently in the studio with Frank Jez. We are working on an exciting new concept Urban Live Project. So watch this space…
