Northern Ireland’s only ice hockey team, the Belfast Giants are taking the city by storm at the moment, wowing crowds at their Odyssey Arena home with their on ice action and top of the league position.
GO’s Sarah-Jayne Cassells caught up with Giants Captain Adam Keefe to find out what all the fuss is about…
The Belfast Giants are Ireland’s premier ice hockey team and are currently well into their 10th season. The Giants have enjoyed success to the tune of two League Championships and a Playoff championship whilst exerting themselves at the highest level in British ice hockey. They have succeeded on the European stage too, competing in the finals of the Continental Cup. In 2011-12 the Giants earned their place as the Elite League Champions and are well on target to reach that goal again for 2012-13.
This sport certainly isn’t for the faint hearted, it’s fast paced, full on action, with a fight or two thrown into the mix, but it certainly makes for additive watching. You can’t help but get caught up in it all that it’s no wonder that the Giants welcomed their one-millionth visitor to the Odyssey Arena last season.
Hailing all the way from Ontario, Canada, 28-year-old Belfast Giants Captain Adam Keefe is a tough, gritty, and very popular player in the UK Elite League. Loved by his fans and loathed by the other teams for his on ice abilities. This is one Giant to watch, but after meeting him, I can reveal he’s a gentle giant really!
